Features and Differences

Both new Nokia smart-phones come with the OS version Windows Phone 7.5 Mango, a 1.4 GHz single core processor by Qualcomm, HSPA and Wifi. The Nokia Lumia 800 features an 3.7-inch AMOLED touch-screen with ClearBlack filter layer and a resolution of 800 x 480 pixels, an 8-megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss lens and 16 GB on-board memory. Buyers of the Nokia Lumia 710 will have to themselves with an 3.7-inch TFT-LCD ClearBlack touch-screen with 800 x 480 pixels, an 5-megapixel camera and 4 GB of on-board memory. Another difference between both phones: The Nokia Lumia 800 comes in a nice and solid polycarbonat case, the Lumia 710 in a plastic shell.

Special Nokia Services

Nokia will try to further differentiate its Windows Phones from other smart-phones with Microsoft OS by installing special applications on its phones such as the navigation service Nokia Drive (the new version of Ovi Maps), Nokia Music with Mix Radio or ESPN Sports. However, in Germany only Nokia Drive will be available on the Nokia Lumia 800 – at least for the beginning.

Availability

In Germany, the Nokia Lumia 800 will be launched on November 15th. That means the Windows Phone will be available that day at some stores. Telekom, O2 and provider Mobilcom-Debitel will start offering the Nokia that day. On the other hand, the Nokia Lumia 800 will hit Vodafone stores not sooner than January 2012.

The Nokia Lumia 710 will not be launched in Germany this year. It will probably be available at the beginning of 2012.

Purchase Prices

The recommended retail price of the Nokia Lumia 800 is € 499.00. Telekom does offer the Windows Phone for € 499.95 without plan, Mobilcom-Debitel for € 499.00 without plan. At Telekom and Mobilcom-Debitel stores interested consumers can already pre-order the Nokia Lumia 800. They can also choose to buy the Nokia Lumia 800 with a 24-months contract of Telekom or Mobilcom-Debitel. Then, the down payment for the phone will be lower (depending on the plan chosen) and the remaining amount will be slapped on the price plan’s monthly fee. At O2 stores, the Nokia Lumia 800 will cost € 481.00 with or without plan. It is possible, to pay the entire amount at once or to buy the phone via finance purchase (O2 My Handy).

The recommended retail price of the Nokia Lumia 800 is € 320.00.

What Else Should You Know?

The Nokia Lumia phones do not work with regular SIM cards, they only accept micro SIM cards (the ones that fit into the Apple iPhone 4 or iPhone 4S, too). There are no slots for microSD memory cards, but via Microsoft Skydrive users of the Lumia phones get 25 GB web storage. Syncing with Outlook on your PC is not possible unless you look for special apps, syncing via Nokia’s Ovi Suite is not possible at all – syncing must be done via the Cloud. And the battery of the Nokia Lumia 800 and Lumia 710 cannot be replaced.
