The German telephone market offers customers the choice between mainline connections of the incumbent telco Deutsche Telekom and mainline connections of interregional and city carriers. Competitors of Deutsche Telekom are, for example, Arcor/Vodafone, Hansenet (Alice), and Versatel, which operate in several German states, as well as companies such as Ewe Tel in Lower Saxony, M-net in Bavaria, or Netcologne in Cologne. In addition, there are providers that offer telephone and internet connections over the coaxial cable such as Kabel Deutschland, Kabel BW in Baden-Wuerttemberg, and Unitymedia in Hesse and North Rhine-Westphalia.

Most internet providers in Germany offer broadband internet access via DSL or via coaxial cable only with a long minimum term of 24 months. However, there are a some exceptions for internet users who need a broadband internet connection only for a few months: Internet providers such as Congstar, Hansenet (Alice), M-net and Netcologne also have price plan packages consisting of a home phone connection, a DSL internet connection and flat rate tariffs for phone calls and internet access with a minimum term of just one month. The monthly fee for such double flat packages with a DSL 6000 or DSL 16000 connection comes to 30 euros, one-time set-up fees with a basic DSL modem range between 40 and 80 euros.
