Operator O2 Germany provides the personal navigation and mapping service Telmap to its customers. Effective immediately, the application is pre-installed on many new GPS-enabled mobile phones such as Motorola Milestone, HTC Touch HD2, Samsung Galaxy or Sony Ericsson W995. Customers who are already using GPS-enabled smartphones can download the Telmap client directly to their phones at http://wap.telmap.com/o2de/. O2 Germany offers the Telmap navigation service to its customers for free, regardless of whether they have a prepaid price plan or a fixed-term agreement. The only fees are for the mobile data transmission.

Telmap navigation is ideal for pedestrians and uses spoken and graphical navigation instructions to guide the user to the desired destination in a step-by-step manner. For people traveling by car it also includes in-car 3D maps with text-to-speech technology as well as the latest traffic information from ADAC with alternative route options. While navigating to interesting sights when visiting a city the Telmap service will show bars, restaurants or hotels that are close by. The requirement is a GPS-enabled mobile phone.

A version for Palm WebOS is planned for the summer of this year. This is surprising since O2 Germany is marketing the latest Palm smartphones such as the Palm Pre (EUR 509.00) or the Palm Pixi Plus (EUR 389.00).
