Overview of Prepaid Mobile Data Price Plans for Smartphone Users

Mobile Data Price Plans (Prepaid) for Smartphone Users in GermanyThis is an overview of mobile data price plans on a prepaid basis that are available for mobile phone or smartphone users in Germany. Subscribers can choose between different offers in the networks of Deutsche Telekom (T-Mobile), Vodafone, E-Plus, and O2 Germany and between different pricing models (per megabyte, per day or per month). Prepaid starter packages include a SIM card for voice and mobile data services and sometimes include a small amount of credit for calls, text messages and/or mobile access to the internet.

Buyers should have their ID on them when getting a prepaid starter package at a mobile phone store. When ordering a prepaid starter package at a web store, they have to indicate a residence in Germany and pay by credit card or direct debit. Click on the providers’ names in the table to go to their websites.

Data transfer speeds are still highest in the 3G networks of Deutsche Telekom, Vodafone and O2 Germany with up to 7.2 mbps download speed. However, these fast data transfer speeds are not available everywhere in Germany. Especially in rural areas, users might experience much slower data transmission. Sometimes, the provider limits the maximum data transfer speeds right away, for example Deutsche Telekom in all prepaid price plans realized over its network. In flat rate tariffs, data transfer speeds are usually reduced for the remaining days of a month as soon as a certain amount of data volume has been downloaded (1 GB or 5 GB) - in this overview these data volume limits are indicated in parentheses.

With many of these prepaid price plans services such as internet telephony (voice over IP), instant messaging or peer-to-peer-services are not allowed.

Based on the operators named in the article many new prepaid mobile data tariffs for smartphones have been introduced to the german market. Especially tariffs using o2 seem to offer very cheap prepaid rates for smartphones using the mobile internet.

    Hi there.
If I was to get the 02 plan listed above (Pre paid 1 gig over 30 days for 15 euros) and happened to use all that data, could I then top up with another gig @ 15 euros keeping the dame cell number?
Or would i have to start again and get a new sim effectivley changing my cell phone number?
    Thanks

No, with the O2-o plan and the tariff option Internet-Pack M+ you get a flat rate tariff with 1 GB data volume for faster data transfers (faster than GPRS) for a period of 30 days. As soon as these 30 days have passed by you get another 1 GB for UMTS downloads and uploads (unless you have canceled the mobile data tariff option). It is not possible to book the tariff option again before the 30-day period has ended. Hope that helps.

Will be in Germany for July 2011. I have a Samsung Captivate SGH-I897 GSM phone 850, 900, 1800, 1900. If the phone is unlocked will it work with any of these voice and data plans?

    Thanks

    Dear Bjoern,

    1. Please explain the meaning of the termin FLAT rate.

    2. When I replace my original Sim to a new local Sim, do all my phone data and downloads remain as before?

    Best Regards. Rina

    Hi Rina -

flat rate means you only pay a fixed amount for a specific service and there are no additional costs. But there might be other restrictions or limitations such as lower bandwidth, e.g. once you have reached a certain mobile data volume limit. However, providers are much more creative in what to call a flat rate, so carefully check the terms and conditions before booking a flat rate.
