Review: Dual SIM Phone LG KS660

19 December 2009 No Comment

It is not easy to find the dual SIM phone LG KS660 at German stores because it has been introduced to the Asian and Eastern European markets. However, some German shops have imported the LG KS660 and sell it for prices beginning at EUR 270.00 without contract. Like other dual SIM phones it offers the possibility to have two SIM cards ready at the same time in one device. In addition, it sports a touchscreen with widgets, a 5-megapixel camera with autofocus and video capture, a music player and an FM radio. Having tested the mobile phone for the past three weeks I have come to the conclusion that the despite all the additional features you should take the LG KS660 for what it is: a mobile phone for two cellular accounts. People expecting anything else of this mobile phone will be disappointed when using it.

First of all, the quality of the pictures shot with the 5-megapixel camera are not worth mentioning. Photos are colorful but show image noise and lack sharpness. The music player offers basic features such as playlists, equalizer presets and a specific sync mode for the Windows Media Player. The sound is quite good. The LG KS660 comes with a regular headset even though the dual SIM phone does not have a 2.5-millimeter jack. The headset can be connected to the phone with the help of an adapter that is also included in the scope of delivery. Since the dual SIM phone is capable to multitasking, it is possible to listen to music and use another application at the same time. To make a long story short: You only want to take the LG KS660 for shooting pictures or listening to music when you don’t have a real camera or a real music player at hand.

The resistive 3.0-inch TFT-touchscreen of the LG KS660 comes with a resolution of 240 x 400 pixels and 262,144 colors. For inputs, it takes quite some pressure by finger or by stylus. Most of the time the candy-bar style phone can easily be operated by finger inputs. The main feature for using the phone’s stylus is the handwriting recognition application. Multi touch or kinetic scrolling are not supported by the touchscreen of the LG KS660. However, because of an accelerometer websites, documents and the virtual QWERTZ keyboard can be shown in landscape mode. The menu with four main areas (communication, entertainment, settings, utilities), icons and widgets is clearly arranged and self-explanatory. There are two homescreens for speed dial and for widgets.

For mobile data transmissions the LG KS660 GPRS and EDGE, but no UMTS or WiFi. Since the screen of the dual SIM phone is comparably small it is no fun to visit regular web pages, it is good advice to use the mobile web portals. The email client supports IMAP, POP and SMTP, delivers – with the right settings – new messages automatically and does only show the text part of HMTL emails. A program called Picsel File Viewer allows the user to read attached documents.

The LG KS660 offers up to 3.5 hours of speaking time, reception quality and acoustics are nothing to complain about. What I really liked about the phone: It is easy to switch between the two cellular accounts when using certain features or services without exchanging the SIM cards. Only when changing the settings for the main SIM card the phone will reboot in order to adopt the new settings. Different colors and icons show which cellular account has been activated when using a certain service.

In my opinion the LG KS660 is a good dual SIM phone which can keep up with other cell phones of the mid-range price segment. And believe me: Even though you can read other opinions elsewhere, the LG KS660 is not a business oriented phone: It does not even support UMTS or WiFi and there is no real office software on the phone.
