The new messaging service Yuilop offers free SMS messages and community chats on Android smart-phones and Android tablets. A beta version of the application can now be downloaded from the Android Market for free. Once the app is installed on the Android smart-phone or tablet, it connects to the device’s address book and users can conduct Facebook chats or community chats with other users of the Yuilop app on their mobile. Further versions supporting other platforms such as Blackberry, Symbian, Windows Phone 7 and iOS will be coming soon, as well.

Apple has introduced its new tablet iPad 2 and cut purchase prices for the first iPad. In Germany, the new iPad 2 will be available on March 25th – two weeks later than in the United States. And Apple hasn’t announced yet how much money the new iPad 2 will cost in Apple stores in Germany. In the United States the Apple tablet will cost between $ 499.00 for the iPad 2 WiFi with 16 GB memory and $ 829.00 for the iPad 2 WiFi + 3G with 64 GB storage capacity. That means: The new iPad 2 will debut with the exact same price as the iPad 1 did last year in April.

From the end of April, Telekom will be offering customers the tablet PC Motorola Xoom with Android 3.0 (Honeycomb) operating system for € 699.95. The version featuring UMTS mobile telecommunications technology for mobile data transmission will be available exclusively through Deutsche Telekom for 90 days. But the Motorola Xoom is only one of the products, Telekom is presenting visitors at this year’s CeBIT fair in Hanover. How quickly the picture can change: Even though the smart-phone manufacturer HTC had limited the number of journalists attending the press conference at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, there was quite some scrimmage at the Theatre Lliure close to the trade show area. Everyone expected not only to see new smart-phones but also the first tablet of the manufacturer. The HTC Flyer was the star of the HTC presence at Mobile World Congress this week.

Together with Simfy, German operator Telefónica O2 Germany will launch a new music streaming service for users users of PCs, laptops, tablets or smart-phones. Customers will get access to a musical repertoire that includes more than eight million songs – from pop to indie, and metal to electro – when booking a flat rate tariff that costs € 8.99 per month. The new music service will be available in April, new users can try it for free for the first month.

The E-Plus Group (KPN), Chinese operator China Mobile and Chinese network supplier ZTE will start an LTE TDD field trial on 2.6 GHz frequencies in Germany next month in order to investigate the capabilities of ZTE’s commercial equipment. E-Plus has acquired this spectrum in the German spectrum auction last year. ZTE will be setting up the base stations, China Mobile is support the field trial with its know-how in the TDD technology.

Telefónica O2 Germany will get a new name. Following completion of the integration of fixed network service provider HanseNet (Alice), the company will change its name on April 1st. The new name will be Telefónica Germany. The company bearing the familiar O2 brand has already been part of the global Telefónica Group since 2006. In the course of this year the new corporate brand will be introduced in all the countries making up Telefónica Europe. Germany is the first country in the Group to make the changeover.
