Conditions couldn’t be worse for the new Nokia E7 which is meant to be the latest smart-phone model of the successful Communicator series of Nokia: Just before launching the E7, the Finnish handset manufacturer declared that it will eventually discontinue building smart-phones with Symbian^3 and rather focus on developing handsets running on the Microsoft OS Windows Phone 7. However, there are still good reasons out there to buy the Nokia E7. Some of these are given in this review on Nokia’s newest Symbian^3 smart-phone.

Mobile phone users can now order the new Symbian 3 smart-phone Nokia N8 in Germany. At the Nokia web store it is available for € 479.00, but it will not be delivered before September. Other web stores in Germany alreday list the Nokia N8 as well. Here purchase prices start at € 440.00 without contract. This week I met Nokia in Berlin and had the opportunity to take a first look at the N8 and I want to share my first impressions of the smart-phone running on the new operating system Symbian 3. For Nokia fans going to buy a new smart-phone with good multi-media, social networking and messaging features it could be worthwhile to wait for two more months because the N8 shows that Nokia is back on the right track.

According to the manufacturer, the Nokia 7230 is made for the use of social media such as Facebook, Twitter, YouTube or Flickr - but at first glance it doesn't show. This mobile doesn't have a physical QWERTZ keyboard for faster texting, it does neither support HSPA for faster uploads nor WiFi for free internet access on the way, and its integrated camera seems to be below par. But let's not get carried away: We should keep in mind that the Nokia 7230, which is running on the S40 platform, is just a regular mobile phone in a stylish design that offers quite a few ways to stay in contact with friends and to share pictures with them, as this review shows. And because of that it is less expensive than a high-end smartphone.

Samsung seems to be pretty successful with low-cost smartphones such as the Samsung Corby S3650 or the Samsung B3410. Such smartphones cost a little more than EUR 100.00 without contract and offer a touchscreen, mobile internet access for instant messaging and social networking services such as Facebook, MySpace and Twitter and sometimes even a real QWERTZ keyboard which makes typing messages and status updates easier. The Nokia 6760 slide is another example of this phone line. With purchase prices beginning above EUR 200.00 without contract at German web stores it is more expensive than the Samsung B3410, but it offers a broad range of features as you can read in this review.

While movie fans have traveled to Berlin this week, the mobile industry met in Barcelona. At the Mobile World Congress 2010 show manufacturers, providers and network suppliers presented latest devices and upcoming trends. Some of it - like eye-controlled earphones by Japanese operator NTT Docomo - seems weird, other things like higher data transmission rates over 4G networks or efforts to introduce standards to the world of smartphone apps sound rather promising. And, of course, handset manufacturers showed lots of new devices with new features. Here is a short wrap up of the most interesting phones and platforms of the show.
